Trash Humpers, Harmony Korine’s anarchic poke in the eye, features a non-existent, virtually unimaginable subculture populated with a strange, repulsive breed of beings. Shot and edited on VHS tape, the characters’ gleeful exploits are captured in freakish and painfully repetitive vignettes, as they embark on a night time prowl through suburban Tennessee, defecating on driveways, having sex with trash cans, fellating foliage and eating pancakes smothered in dish soap. The movie is a brutish stunt that slowly evolves into a nightmarish fairy tale. An artefact rather than a film, Humpers are meant to be a found object, an odd relic from an unknown universe bestowed to us through some incredible happenstance. This is stuff that’s just destined to drive you mad. Make it, make it, don’t fake it!
