Alejandro Jodorowsky meets John Waters. This cult Hong Kong classic from the prolific Shaw Brothers studio is absolute B-movie heaven that aims to disgust as much as to entertain. The basic plot has a former Thai boxer get caught up in a web of fate, Buddhism and black magic when he comes to Thailand to avenge his brother who was crippled in a dirty fight. A wild cross-pollination of supernatural horror, exploitation & kung-fu, The Boxer’s Omen will leave your mouth constantly agape, pummelling your subconscious into submission with one astounding scene after another. On the whole if Buddhism is half as perversely amusing as the film depicts it, it’s time to shave our heads and slip into the saffron robes.
