It is already a well-established fact that Santo and The Shockproof Film Festival are as one, so when the festival plunges into the darker spiritual waters, so does our beloved masked hero in Land of the Dead. In 17th century a certain Caballero El Santo helps to hunt down an evil witch. As she burns at the stake, she swears revenge on the descendants of her tormentors. 300 years later, Santo is engaged to be married, when his fiancée gets possessed by the witch’s spirit. The usual mayhem follows, this time peppered with surprisingly competent special effects, a creepy score and some genuinely atmospheric cinematography, plus a very graphic sequence of open heart surgery thrown in as a bonus. What will they come up with next time?
