You could hardly find a better film to commemorate today’s International Women’s Day than this delicate Australian shocker. The story is deceptively simple: with the looming memory of her husband’s violent death, a single mom struggles to keep her sanity while raising her troubled child who insists there is a monster lurking in their home. The meticulously designed and directed debut feature from writer-director Jennifer Kent manages to deliver real, seat-grabbing jolts while touching on more serious themes. As the director adds: „I’m not saying we all want to go and kill our kids, but it is still a very taboo subject, to say that motherhood is anything but a perfect experience for women."
