Sometimes terrible things happen quite naturally. Described by its director as a mythical interpretation of childhood, The Reflecting Skin weaves elements of vampirism, surrealism, black comedy and religious zealotry throughout its narrative about the perceptions and fantasies of an impressionable young boy in post-war rural America. Ridley is reported to have said that he conceived the film at a period in his life when he was reading Alice in Wonderland and looking at a lot of paintings by Andrew Wyeth. The Reflecting Skin may befuddle you by what it's all about, but like a vivid dream, you'll have a hard time forgetting it.
