Nobody will mistake this for Shakespeare. Wait a minute, actually they will. And quite rightly so. Tromeo & Juliet is an inspired, original update of the classic tale of star crossed lovers, filtered through the Troma universe. A collaboration by Lloyd Kaufman and James Gunn, the script successfully re-imagines the source material for shockproof aficionados. And why force your actors to speak in iambic pentameter when body piercings, rigid nipples, happy decapitations, lesbian sex, penis monsters and a running theme of incest communicate so much more eloquently. They don’t come much better from Tromaville. Teachers should be showing this in the high school literature classes. Sometimes it takes a really twisted mind like Shakespeare to bring out the best in Lloyd Kaufman.
