“Drugs are bad, disco is neat” – that is the core idea of one of the most bizarre blaxploitation films ever. The makers of Disco Godfather were obviously convinced that the only thing, which could save inner-city kids from dope, were discotheques, where people in far out clothes would strike impressive poses on the colour-lit dance floor. To hammer this thought in, their movie features not only vaudeville-like dance performances but also suggestive psychedelic horror sequences of drugs-induced hallucinations. And where does the titular disco godfather fit into all of that? Well, played by the iconic grandfather of rap, Rudy Ray Moore of Dolemite (1975) and The Human Tornado (1976) fame, he just happens to be the best disco dancer and DJ, the coolest ex-cop, the deadliest karate fighter, the hottest lover and the strongest pillar of the African American community; plus the whole movie is a good excuse for him to wear a different outfit in each new scene. Combining Z-grade filmmaking with the logic of a kids cartoon this is the best, or actually the only film you can find with equal amounts of martial-arts butt kicking, urban horror and wild disco shenanigans.
