If you like unconventional erotic horror films you really shouldn’t miss this one. Based on a short story by Japan’s premiere master of the macabre, Edogawa Ranpo, Noboru Tanaka’s sumptuous roman poruno Watcher in the Attic straddles many genres. It is a psychological thriller, a period drama and a very steamy piece of erotica. The landlord of a boarding house in 1923 Tokyo is keen on spying on the bizarre and perverse close encounters taking place beneath his roof. One day he sees a woman killing her lover and decides he's found his soul mate. The story and its direction manage to be both intentionally sleazy and artistic, making the audience question their own desires. Are you ready to question yours?
