Belgian co-directors Hélène Cattet and Bruno Forzani garnered an instant cult following with Amer (2009) and The Strange Colour of Your Body’s Tears (2013), both of which paid luxurious homage to 1970s giallo movies. Their latest film, Let the Corpses Tan, sees the pair applying their expert pastiche skills to violent European crime thrillers of the same decade. Based on a cult novel by Jean-Patrick Manchette and Jean-Pierre Bastid, it tells a story of a heist-gone-wrong, but its real strength lies in its sheer stylistic excess. With its Leone-style extreme close-ups and Godardian juxtapositions, this lurid bloodbath is especially designed for the shockproof cinephiles. A film that edits to the rhythm of gunfire.
